Orange was the first word I learned to speak in English. Now it's switched and I remember more English than Mandarin. 橙哭 | Squeezing Sorrow From An Orange performance for orange and guitar is a simple exercise in amplifying the sound of an object that has no socially recognized language, to mourn the loss of language. Can we imagine speaking to oranges/in oranges/with oranges/as oranges? We perform shifts in identity and language as code-switching. Iterations of the piece also shift between the playful, absurd and melancholic. It's been performed solo and in collaboration with drum machine but always with an orange against a guitar until the orange's skin shreds.
How do we repeat time, get it back, or unwind the time stored in our body and release it? 嗡嗡 | DRONE FOR ORANGES | ORANGE DRONE is the audio from the Squeezing Sorrow performance at McLean County Arts Center for the Emerging Illinois Artists opening reception. The signal was treated in four steps: reversed, slowed down, doubled and modulated. The video documentation is treated the same way with the operations of reversing, slowing down, doubling and signal modulation.
